Captain Britain at Wimbledon. The joyful insanity that is Spidey Super Stories 32.

Did you know that in 1978 Captain Britain appeared at Wimbledon or as it was known then Wimbleton? Did you know that at the hallowed tennis club he joined Spider-Man in a tennis match against Dr Octopus? No? Well all of this happened in Spidey Super Stories issue 32, let me tell you about it.

Before we start I must confess I only found out about this story in the last twenty-four hours and I am indebted to followers of the Captain Britain fans’ page and blog Facebook page, in particular Janet Black for bringing this piece of Captain Britain madness to my attention. This story is so great it would be rude not to share it with my readers but first a bit of background

Started in the Seventies Spidey Super Stories was a comic spin-off from the TV show of the same name. Issue 32 saw Spidey team up with Captain Britain in a rather topical adventure set at the Wimbledon/Wimbleton tennis tournament. For those who like the facts this story was written by Jim Salicrup and penciled by Win Mortimer, it was published in March 1978.

Please enjoy the story as it appeared so many years ago below, apologies for the quality of the scans they are taken from YouTube.

Cap attempts to foil a heist by Doc Ock. You have got to love those old fashioned bank bags full of coins, so impractical.

Spidey in London for various reasons joins in, only for there to be the usual mix up. I love the last panel here with the “SOCK” as Cap brains Spidey.

Aunt May is dragged into the fight as Doc Ock uses her as a hostage to get to Wimbledon/ Wimbleton. At no time is it explained why Aunt May has a flower pot on her head but moving on.

Cap and Spidey team up and head after him, despite the petty name calling. Flag face indeed!

Doc Ock shows he’s certainly not going to play fair.

Luckily with a combination of web and force field Cap and Spidey stop the nefarious villain.

And with Aunt May rescued by Spider-Woman, Doc Ock is marched off to jail

Super Spidey stories 32 Captain Britain 10

I’m for once lost for words, this one-off story is so mad and marvelous in its insanity. I love the idea that Captain Britain appeared at Wimbledon/Wimbleton, I love the idea Doc Ock is good at tennis simply because he has so many arms and I love the fact Cap uses his brains and force field to capture the Doc.

I’m not sure why Wimbledon is renamed Wimbleton, I mean it was only in 1977 that Cap faced off against the Queen and Marvel didn’t see fit to change anything then so why Wimbledon’s name was altered is beyond me?

Apparently I’m informed this isn’t Cap’s only appearance in Spidey Super Stories and I have an eBay order out for another wild tale. If your interested in this series why not check out Robin Barnard and his talented friends excellent parodies of these comics on Facebook. Check it out here.

The top 5 most original Captain Britain custom action figures

There’s a lot of very talented people out there making custom action figures of Captain Britain, and today we’re going to highlight five of these creators and their work. People who were not content to make standard Cap figures, but went that one step further to produce some great original action figures.

Let’s start with a great take on Cap, one that shows him without his mask.

Designed and built by Mat’s Customs, I love the perfect capture of Brian Braddock with his marvelous coiffure.

Next is a figure I’ve featured before but which always impresses me with its level of detail, zombie Captain Britain.

He really looks fierce, and is that the remnants of Nightcrawler he’s holding ?

Next up is a great retro figure.

CaptainBritain mego

From Troy Younger comes a Mego Cap which imagines how he might have looked had he been released as an action figure in the Seventies.

I’m not sure what this figure represents so I’ve called it medieval Cap.

From toycutter I love Cap’s shield and sword plus the figure seems bulkier almost as if that’s armour Cap is wearing.

The last figure now and I believe I’ve saved the best til last.

Captain_Britian_My_Little_Pony

From Jodi Moisan via the John Byrne forum comes this fantastic My Little Pony Captain Britain which I think is marvelous.

So there you have five original Captain Britain custom figures which celebrate the amazing talents of his fans. Which is your favourite ? Do you own any custom Captain Britain figures? Let me know in the comments below.

RIP Captain Britain’s Herb Trimpe

We’ve just recently learnt via Comicbook.com the sad news that Captain Britain co-creator Herb Trimpe has passed away today.

Of course Herb was responsible for many more famous creations than Captain Britain, but here on this blog we choose to celebrate his work on the UK’s finest superhero.

Herb Trimpe

Chris Claremont in a 2006 interview for the Captain Britain volume one trade paperback said of Herb:

“He’s one of the very best at what he does… he was one of the core talents on the Marvel art staff.”

Claremont added: “The work I did with him is but one of the smaller fractions of his career and in numbers probably mine as well. But among those few are stories that I am most proud of even today. ”

Fine words I’m sure you will agree for a great talent who will be missed, but lets finish on a high with some great Trimpe art.

The Complete Captain Britain comic guide. Issue 4: Hour of the Hurricane

Welcome to week four of the Captain Britain Blog’s ongoing review of Captain Britain’s Seventies adventures. Full details of how the review works can be found here, then after reading that why not enjoy….

Hour of the Hurricane.

Captain Britain issue 4. Published November 3rd 1976.

Writer: Chris Claremont.

Artists: Herb Trimpe and Fred Kida.

Captain Britain issue 4

The story so far: While having a morning workout Captain Britain is interrupted by Jacko Tanner and forced to change back to Brian Braddock in mid-air. Luckily he suffers no harm but his ego takes a beating from Tanner who thinks Brian is gutless. Brian reveals he won’t lift a fist against Tanner due to a mysterious oath he took for his parents.

Later as Brian joins Courtney Ross for breakfast they are interrupted by the Hurricane, Brian turns into Captain Britain and a brawl ensues. Blasted by the Hurricane Cap is defeated and the Hurricane escapes crowing his triumph.

You have been watching: First appearance of the Hurricane in costume and first mention of Brian Braddock’s parents.

Continuity: We witness another use for Cap’s trusty quarter staff as he uses it to pole vault.

The Hurricane’s powers are described as flight, wrist blasters – which can be reversed to suck, body armour and the power to create mini hurricanes.

Brian Braddock mentions his parents and an oath he took; we won’t see them however until issue 14.

Cap demonstrates he’s not all brawn as he uses his brain to attempt to attack the Hurricane where he will be safest at the eye of his storm.

Well said old chap: I did enjoy Cap’s snarky and very British aside as he beats up Hurricane.Captain Britain issue 4 Cap fights the Hurricane

Stand out art: The dramatic entrance of the Hurricane.Captain Britain issue 4 enter the Hurricane

Final Thoughts: After last issues victory Captain Britain comes down to earth with a bump with problems for both his identities. The Hurricane rapidly proves he is the worst of these as despite his second-rate powers he quickly triumphs over Cap. It’s here we see a major problem with Captain Britain in that he does not have the super power of flight. Now a lot of heroes don’t fly but they all seem to have some ability to scale heights and attack air bound foes, here Cap is reduced to pole vaulting up to Hurricane as luckily he’s flying quite low. The lack of the ability to fly will return again to trouble Cap and become I feel such an issue that the writers cleverly soon provide him with the ability to do so. The story also suffers as after all the Arthurian trappings attached to Captain Britain’s origin it’s odd to see that his first major super villain encounter is against a fairly mundane foe, yet again like his missing flight ability this is something the writers will soon change.

Captain Britain fans make a note in your diary for the 25th February.

Captain Britain fans make a note in your diary for the 25th February, as that’s when the promised all Cap New Avengers 30 hits comic book shelves as part of the Time Runs Out Avengers event, and the prelude to Secret Wars.

Captain Britain New Avengers 30

Little is known of the content other than we have been promised some answers to the state of Captain Britain from Tom Brevoort as I reported here, either way we can see if my speculation here was correct.

With Captain Britain going on to appear in Secret Wars it’s certain he will survive Time Runs Out, however the fate of the Captain Britain Corps and possibly Meggan are up in the air.

Are you looking forward to New Avengers 30? What do you think lies in store for Captain Britain within its pages? Sound off in the comments below.

Captain Britain and Meggan in the course of superhero love never did run smooth part 1.

The course of true love never did run smooth according to Shakespeare and this has never been so well demonstrated when you look at Captain Britain and his wife Meggan. With this in mind I decided it would be interesting to look at how Cap and Meggan came together, and examine a relationship that according to Meggan’s co-creator Alan Davis might never have come to pass.

So join me now for the first part of our look at Cap and Meggan’s life-long love affair, including their early romance, and how the forming of Excalibur and their adventures with that team could have driven them apart. Part two will be out next week which will cover Cap and Meggan through the trials and tribulations of the X-Men House of M event and beyond showing how not even death could separate them, plus some of my idle speculation on their future

To understand Cap and Meggan’s relationship we need to start with Meggan’s introduction in Mighty World of Marvel issue seven – The Candlelight Dialogues – from December 1983, with Alan Moore and Alan Davis credited as her creators. It’s obvious from the story that Meggan hero worships Captain Britain, but this was never originally destined to turn to love until Alan Moore left the book, Alan Davis explains the Meggan/Cap plan.

” When Alan quit writing Captain Britain he tied up all of the narrative loose ends and I was faced with writing Captain Britain from a cold start. I had plotted the whole CB romance with a new-female shape-shifting character when I had the idea of linking back to the original continuity by having my new-female evolve from the ‘Candlelight Dialogues’ Meggan. ”

early Meggan

Whatever the plan you can see Meggan looked very different to her current appearance, and as an interesting aside it seems she was also partial to the odd cigarette.

meggan enjoys a cigarette

Marvel went on to explain the reason behind Meggan’s initial look, it seems she was a shape shifter with a hidden talent in that she was often influenced by her feelings or surroundings when she underwent metamorphosis. In her youth Meggan had grown hair to keep out the cold, and her monstrous look was due to her picking up on the hatred her family and friends had for her.

Cap first met Meggan in the traditional superhero fashion of the mistaken fight, Meggan had been driven mad by the full moon attacking Captain Britain, and in doing so she accidently kills her friend Mickey. At her request Cap takes Meggan to Mickey’s family to apologise, and you can’t help but think he is impressed by this action, and so the seeds of romance are sown.

Cap takes Meggan in and it’s obvious with her childlike view of the world and unabashed enthusiasm for life that his respect for her might slowly turn to love. To me this is only so natural as Cap is still reeling from Jasper’s Warp and as Meggan is one of the few good things to come out of that escapade then it’s only right he be attracted to her.

Meggan responds by being there for Cap when his sister Betsy is blinded by Slaymaster, and he is there for her after her traumatic physical change at the hands of the warpies. Meggan’s change here is worth looking at in more detail, while blessed with a big heart and a strong sense of right and wrong her looks never matched her personality, and she was described often as having hidden potential. The warpies force her to come out of her chrysalis state and emerge as a beautiful woman finally casting aside the part of her power that made her change to how people see her, and which had been a mental block on how she looked up until now. I still think Captain Britain would have married Meggan however she looked, but this change moves their relationship onto the next stage as they tour the world together before setting up home in a lighthouse, a lighthouse that was soon to be the scene of many a problem that threatened to drive Cap and Meggan apart.

The cause of all these problems stemmed from a good idea when Captain Britain and Meggan formed the superhero team Excalibur. The first problem they encountered was Cap believing his sister the X-Man Pyslocke was dead became depressed and distant from Meggan. The next problem the lovebirds faced was Nightcrawler drooling over Meggan and her empathic powers meaning she couldn’t help but respond to Nightcrawler’s emotions. Nightcrawler then compounded the issue by not walking away and instead taking every chance he could to score cheap points over Captain Britain.

nightcrawler and meggan

Luckily after Cap issued a sound drubbing to the elvish rapscallion things got a little better, but sadly Cap’s off panel death meant it would be some time before he and Meggan could continue their romance.

Captain Britain in Excalibur 68

Captain Britain dies off panel in Excalibur 68

Meggan during Cap’s absence became a stronger character and her immaturity of the world reduced when Douglock took her under his wing. When Cap finally returned to Excalibur he and Meggan were married and things never looked better for them.

Of course this being a comic book story you know that this can easily change, join us next week for part two of this feature when we look at how post Excalibur Meggan and Captain Britain faced the toughest challenge to their relationship, and I speculate on the what the future might hold for the couple.
