Captain Britain in Secret Wars 3 and what’s going on with Meggan?

There isn’t too much to report on Captain Britain in this weeks Secret Wars 3, but thanks to eagle-eyed Blog fan Eric we do have some interesting Meggan news for you.

So spoilers for Secret Wars and A-Force follow after the cover below, please don’t carry on reading if you’ve yet to read these books, and you don’t want their secrets spoiled.

Captain Britain in Secret Wars 3 cover

In what has become a regular pattern for Captain Britain after a Cap heavy story – See Secret Wars 2 – he vanishes in the next issue. So Secret Wars 3 just mentions the outcome of his face off against Baron Sinister.

Captain Britain in Secret Wars 3

Sadly we are spared the sight of the actual statue itself.

Now we are not aware of all the rules of Secret Wars and its Battleworlds, but not content to be Captain Britain’s wife in Higher Avalon another Meggan has also been spotted in Arcadia where the A-Force title is set, take a look at the picture below.

Meggan in A Force

While not named there is no doubt in my mind that that’s Meggan, what this means for the pregnant Meggan in Higher Avalon is unknown. Will either survive, is this Meggan a member of A-Force or is she just a bystander caught up in the action? Having a “spare” Meggan might allow Marvel to sidestep the complications for Captain Britain plot wise if he was to be a father post Secret Wars. Personally I would prefer both to survive and Cap to be caught between the two in a sit-com type comic similar to Friends – or perhaps not.

What are your thoughts on the lack of Captain Britain action this week? Are there two Meggan’s and which should survive? Let me know how you feel in the comments below.

Some odd facts about Captain Britain’s Meggan from 1989

So I’ve been doing some research on Captain Britain’s wife Meggan for a project I’m working on with Avengers UK, it’s no hardship though as it involves reading a lot of comics. During my reading I picked up the The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update 89, issue 5 as it contains an article about Meggan, once I’d read the article I thought it would be worth a share due to some odd facts it contains

The article lurks behind a Ron Frenz cover.

Meggan Marvel Universe Update 1989 issue 5

The scan hasn’t come out great as the comic is quite old, so I’ll summarize the three best odd facts about the article below.

Meggan Marvel Universe Update 1989 issue 5 picture 2

The first oddity is apparently Meggan’s first UK appearance isn’t worth talking about as the page lists her American debut in New Mutants annual 2. Why her UK debut isn’t worth listing escapes me, maybe Marvel were on one of their periodic falling outs with Alan Moore, or was it because the UK comic in question wasn’t available except as a back issue? Who Knows?

Secondly the article states that apparently Meggan is only as powerful as a woman of the same age who engages in moderate regular exercise. Hmmm, I don’t think so as this 1998 Excalibur issue 3 panel shows.

meggan hulks out

Last but not least the article tells us it seems Meggan will lose her powers and health if she remains for too long a time outside the British Isles, but she won’t have the same problem in magical realms or dimensions. I can’t put my hand on any comic where this happened to Meggan, Captain Britain briefly suffered the problem until it was quickly forgotten.

Despite the mild inaccuracies with the article it’s still a great little read, with nice Alan Davis art, and it makes me want to read more Marvel updates so it’s surely had the effect Marvel wanted. My Meggan research will continue but I think I will source something more accurate, maybe WIkipedia?

For more inaccurate Marvel facts why not read my thoughts on bizarre Captain Britain trading cards here and here.

Captain Britain and Meggan spotted in this weeks Fantastic Four issue 643

So it seems someone at Marvel is listening to me about the absence of Captain Britain’s wife Meggan from current Cap events in Avenger’s Time Runs Out, as she popped up recently in the latest issue of Fantastic Four number 643.

In that comic the Fantastic Four are having to deal with the fallout of the Heroes Reborn event from 1996 – don’t ask – and as portals open up across the world letting in the bad guys the heroes rally to the fight. As one of these portals opens up in London Captain Britain, Meggan and a host of UK heroes turn up to pummel the baddies in there one panel appearance below.

Click to enlarge. so you can see Cap, Meggan, Union Jack, Spitfire and more.

I’m guessing this is before Time Runs Out as Cap is wearing a different costume, but it’s nice to see writer James Robinson has done his homework for this one panel UK hero appearance.

Does this mean Meggan is safe and sound and will survive Time Runs Out or even turn up in Secret Wars? I don’t have any answers but she’s a major part of Cap continuity so let’s hope she doesn’t get the Captain Britain Corps treatment.

Captain Britain and Meggan in the course of superhero love never did run smooth part 1.

The course of true love never did run smooth according to Shakespeare and this has never been so well demonstrated when you look at Captain Britain and his wife Meggan. With this in mind I decided it would be interesting to look at how Cap and Meggan came together, and examine a relationship that according to Meggan’s co-creator Alan Davis might never have come to pass.

So join me now for the first part of our look at Cap and Meggan’s life-long love affair, including their early romance, and how the forming of Excalibur and their adventures with that team could have driven them apart. Part two will be out next week which will cover Cap and Meggan through the trials and tribulations of the X-Men House of M event and beyond showing how not even death could separate them, plus some of my idle speculation on their future

To understand Cap and Meggan’s relationship we need to start with Meggan’s introduction in Mighty World of Marvel issue seven – The Candlelight Dialogues – from December 1983, with Alan Moore and Alan Davis credited as her creators. It’s obvious from the story that Meggan hero worships Captain Britain, but this was never originally destined to turn to love until Alan Moore left the book, Alan Davis explains the Meggan/Cap plan.

” When Alan quit writing Captain Britain he tied up all of the narrative loose ends and I was faced with writing Captain Britain from a cold start. I had plotted the whole CB romance with a new-female shape-shifting character when I had the idea of linking back to the original continuity by having my new-female evolve from the ‘Candlelight Dialogues’ Meggan. ”

early Meggan

Whatever the plan you can see Meggan looked very different to her current appearance, and as an interesting aside it seems she was also partial to the odd cigarette.

meggan enjoys a cigarette

Marvel went on to explain the reason behind Meggan’s initial look, it seems she was a shape shifter with a hidden talent in that she was often influenced by her feelings or surroundings when she underwent metamorphosis. In her youth Meggan had grown hair to keep out the cold, and her monstrous look was due to her picking up on the hatred her family and friends had for her.

Cap first met Meggan in the traditional superhero fashion of the mistaken fight, Meggan had been driven mad by the full moon attacking Captain Britain, and in doing so she accidently kills her friend Mickey. At her request Cap takes Meggan to Mickey’s family to apologise, and you can’t help but think he is impressed by this action, and so the seeds of romance are sown.

Cap takes Meggan in and it’s obvious with her childlike view of the world and unabashed enthusiasm for life that his respect for her might slowly turn to love. To me this is only so natural as Cap is still reeling from Jasper’s Warp and as Meggan is one of the few good things to come out of that escapade then it’s only right he be attracted to her.

Meggan responds by being there for Cap when his sister Betsy is blinded by Slaymaster, and he is there for her after her traumatic physical change at the hands of the warpies. Meggan’s change here is worth looking at in more detail, while blessed with a big heart and a strong sense of right and wrong her looks never matched her personality, and she was described often as having hidden potential. The warpies force her to come out of her chrysalis state and emerge as a beautiful woman finally casting aside the part of her power that made her change to how people see her, and which had been a mental block on how she looked up until now. I still think Captain Britain would have married Meggan however she looked, but this change moves their relationship onto the next stage as they tour the world together before setting up home in a lighthouse, a lighthouse that was soon to be the scene of many a problem that threatened to drive Cap and Meggan apart.

The cause of all these problems stemmed from a good idea when Captain Britain and Meggan formed the superhero team Excalibur. The first problem they encountered was Cap believing his sister the X-Man Pyslocke was dead became depressed and distant from Meggan. The next problem the lovebirds faced was Nightcrawler drooling over Meggan and her empathic powers meaning she couldn’t help but respond to Nightcrawler’s emotions. Nightcrawler then compounded the issue by not walking away and instead taking every chance he could to score cheap points over Captain Britain.

nightcrawler and meggan

Luckily after Cap issued a sound drubbing to the elvish rapscallion things got a little better, but sadly Cap’s off panel death meant it would be some time before he and Meggan could continue their romance.

Meggan during Cap’s absence became a stronger character and her immaturity of the world reduced when Douglock took her under his wing. When Cap finally returned to Excalibur he and Meggan were married and things never looked better for them.

Of course this being a comic book story you know that this can easily change, join us next week for part two of this feature when we look at how post Excalibur Meggan and Captain Britain faced the toughest challenge to their relationship, and I speculate on the what the future might hold for the couple.

What Captain Britain comics could we expect after Secret Wars?

With the exciting news breaking last week that Captain Britain will appear in the Marvel event Secret Wars mine and many more of his fan’s thoughts are now concentrated on three things.

First: Will Captain Britain survive Secret Wars?

Second: If he does survive what state will he and his supporting cast be in?

Third: After Secret Wars will we see a new Captain Britain comic, and if so what form will it take?

Today I’m going to speculate on the third of the above thoughts and list seven comic ideas and one actual announced title that should feature Captain Britain, and grace the shelves of any comic book store post Secret Wars. Please remember if I kid I do so out of love.

1. All New Avengers: This title is one hundred percent set to launch after Secret Wars the only missing information being the cast, now Captain Britain is actually an Avenger so it would be great to see him on the roster here. Of course just being an Avenger is no guarantee you will end up on the team, but it would be great to see Cap in one of Marvel’s premier titles even if he wasn’t in every issue.

Captain Britain becomes an Avenger

2. All New International Avengers: From now on the title ideas are purely the results of my speculation, but wouldn’t it be great if Marvel launched an international Avengers team and wouldn’t it be even better if Captain Britain was the leader. I can see this title being similar to DC’s Justice League International or Justice League Europe with a rota of non USA affiliated heroes joining together to fight evil.

3. All New Secret Avengers: While Captain Britain might be too well-known to take part in espionage work his alter ego Brian Braddock might be well placed to serve. He could be the team’s scientific advisor/mission planner directing the operations from the Secret Avengers secret lair, a sort of male counterpart to DC’s Amanda Waller, or perhaps not.

4. All New Captain Britain: If Cap does get a new title this is the odds on favorite, however I don’t want to see just him in action as this title lends itself to the appearance of his wife Meggan as well. Could they be the new Sapphire and Steel or would their adventures be firmly grounded in traditional superhero territory? Why not a bit of both.

Captain Britain 14 Captain britain punch out

So far we have seen some pretty safe bets as to how Captain Britain might appear in a comic post Secret Wars, the next four are bit more “odd” but to me all are workable ideas. Read on and see what you think.

5. The Braddock/Captain Britain Academy: Similar in tone to Lee and Kirby’s X-Men or Wolverine and the X-Men this title would see Cap and Meggan as head master and mistress of a training school for new superheroes, think Hogwarts but with capes not brooms. Old friends such as Dai Thomas or Pete Wisdom might join them as tutors, and perhaps reformed villains such as Hurricane or Joshua Stragg might also make an appearance.

6. Captain Britain Squared: Secret Wars is bringing together the traditional Marvel universe along with all of the heroes from its Ultimate counterpart. To fully take advantage of this why not a new Cap comic where our Cap teams up with his Ultimate counterpart – Jamie Braddock – in a sort of misunderstood cop/buddy movie type way. OK Ultimate Cap is a little on the grim side, but I’m sure a few days or even hours in the company of our Cap would bring a smile to his grizzled face.

Jamie Braddock as Ultimate Captain Britain

Jamie Braddock as Ultimate Captain Britain

7. Captain Britain and the Captain Britain Corps: Providing the Corps survive Secret Wars they might be in such a state that Roma calls on Cap and Meggan to help reorganize them. Think a clash of old school ideas from Roma set off against Cap and Meggan’s new school of superhero thinking, oh and Spider-UK if he’s still alive will be a team fixture.

8. Who you gonna call…the Braddocks! : Imagine a team dedicated solely to solving weird spooky superhero crimes – a sort of cross between Ghostbusters and Scooby-Doo – then you have the idea behind this comic. Brian, Meggan, his brother Jamie and sister Betsy investigate supernatural shenanigans guided from their base at Braddock Manor by the super computer Mastermind. Oh and Widget will not be required to fill any sort of Scrappy-Doo role at all, ever, period.

no widget

So there you have one definite and seven speculative ideas for Captain Britain comic book appearances post Secret Wars, I’m routing for Who you gonna call, but it’s more than likely we will see Cap in Avengers or his own solo title – providing he lives.

If you have any ideas on how Marvel should market Captain Britain after Secret Wars then let me know in the comments below.

The 5 Captain Britain New Year’s resolutions Marvel must make.

2014 was a good year for Captain Britain, as he was thrust back into the comics limelight due to his intriguing appearance in the current Avengers event Time Runs Out. But what does 2015 hold in store for Cap?

Well wonder no longer, as I’m here to help Marvel make 2015 the year of Captain Britain with some handy new year’s resolutions, that if Marvel make them will mean 2015 is Cap’s best year yet.

Resolution number one

2014 proved people like reading comics with Captain Britain in so surely it’s time Marvel realised he needs his own series or a team book – Excalibur reunion anyone? Whatever the format of the book and whether it’s a mini or ongoing series a strong writer/artist team will be required. After his great success last year relaunching Moon Knight I would love Warren Ellis to return to writing Captain Britain, team him with the visual brilliance of Alan Davis and any new Cap comic would surely fly off the stands.

Captain Britain relaunch cover

Captain Britain’s new title imagined by Ben Wilsonham.

Resolution number two.

With Marvel planning a massive cinematic assault in 2015 and beyond surely they could find room for Captain Britain somewhere? OK I admit currently Cap might not have enough punch to carry his own film, but a cameo in Avengers 2 would stir the public interest and help publicise the first resolution. I can picture how the cameo might work, as a global threat envelops the Earth the Avengers notice London is under attack. However they don’t panic, as they announce to the audience the UK has its own Avenger, cue Captain Britain.

Resolution number three

If Cap debuts as a result of resolution one or two then Marvel must decide if he needs a fancy new set of super hero threads to do it in. Now don’t get me wrong I’m a big fan of Cap’s current look, but a cool new suit emblazoned on comic book covers and movie posters wouldn’t do any harm. Marvel could even hold a competition to see who can come up with the best redesign or trawl the wealth of Cap art and designs on deviantART – as long as they credit the original artist!

Resolution number four.

However Cap appears in 2015 Marvel need to be aware that any attempt to reintroduce the blundering Cap that sometimes graced Excalibur is not wanted. Fans know Captain Britain is a physics genius, and any new writer needs to understand this and be intelligent enough to exploit it story wise, hence the choice for resolution one of Warren Ellis for this role.

Resolution number five.

Whether Cap reappears in a team book or a solo title he is going to need a solid supporting cast to fight the good fight with. Marvel’s first Cap team-mate should be none other than his wife Meggan, and please note NightCrawler is not required to appear unless it’s to apologise for his lechery over Cap’s good lady wife during his Excalibur tenure. It might be intriguing to see Cap’s cast grow by his attempting to rehabilitate his mad brother Jamie, catch up with Inspector Thomas or crossing swords with any of his old Seventies foes.

Jamie Braddock by Alan Davis

So here’s hoping Marvel are paying attention and follow these five simple resolutions in 2015 to make it the year Captain Britain is embraced by fans old and new. Agree, disagree or have any Captain Britain resolutions of your own? Then why not leave me a note in the comments below.
