Captain Britain in Free Comic Book Day’s Secret Wars 0.

So today I abandoned my lie in and made my way over to Birmingham to grab some comics as part of Free Comic Book Day, my goal being to get hold of Secret Wars issue 0 as Captain Britain was in it.

Despite the cold and queues my mission was a success, and I can now report on the comic, as per usual if you wish to avoid spoilers read no further.

Free Comic Book Day Secret Wars 0 Captain Britain

For a ten page story the comic does a magnificent job of summarizing everything leading up to Secret Wars, and what the reader can expect when Secret Wars launches. Hickman uses Valeria Richards – Mr Fantastic’s daughter – as the narrator and it’s in her flashback that we see Captain Britain.

Captain Britain in Secret Wars 0

Valeria is telling her audience that hero has turned on hero due to the events of Time Runs Out which is why we see Cap in a battle royale. Now this panel is a 100% flashback to before Secret Wars, and too me seems to occur before Time Runs Out as well, that is why we see Captain Britain looking as he always did, and not the disheveled one-eyed hero we see in Time Runs Out.

So as I reported on here it seems Secret Wars 0 is hinting Captain Britain might just change costume for Secret Wars, as per the preview panel from the forthcoming series below. The reason for the change being perhaps because of the death of the Corps and as Secret Wars 0 states friend has now been pitted against friend Cap changes costume to ease his memories, or just to make a statement. who knows?

Secret wars 1 with Captain Britain and Meggan

Unless of course this panel is a flashback as well!

Anyway back to Secret wars 0, it’s hard from just one panel to tell which side Captain Britain is on, but we do know from the end of Time Runs Out that he joined the so call good guys, and is one of the last Avengers standing going into Secret Wars.

Avengers 44 with Captain Britain and the last Avengers

So there we have Secret Wars 0 in a nutshell, a great introduction but one that not surprisingly keeps all its cards close to its chest, let’s hope more is revealed once the first issue is out.

Before I go I just want to say a big thanks to Nostalgia and Comics in Birmingham where I got my copy of Secret Wars 0, their free comic day event was well organised, had biscuits, lots of people dressed up and lots of kids. Despite a short wait in the cold once inside it the store kept everyone moving but made sure everyone got what they wanted, hats off to a great store .

Is there a costume change for Captain Britain in Secret Wars 1? And is that Meggan?

Thanks to blog follower Mr Fiend the Captain Britain Blog has been alerted to a possible costume change for Captain Britain in Secret Wars issue 1, and a possible Meggan sighting as well.

If you want all the above to remain a mystery then please do not read any further.

Avengers 44 variant with Captain Britain

Mr Fiend drew my attention to the panel below, a preview at the back of Avengers 44 which wasn’t in the version I purchased via Comixology, but I picked up today from Forbidden Planet in Birmingham.

Secret wars 1 with Captain Britain and Meggan

So there’s Cap in his MI-13 costume, and is that Meggan next to him and if it is could she be pregnant?

Then remember this preview panel from Secret Wars 2.

Captain Britain in Secret Wars 2

I wonder now if that is that Ultimate Captain Britain, the dark hair and lack of costume covering the head seem to match, which if so would support a uniform change for the original Cap, but then there is this panel from Secret Wars issue 0 which shows Cap in his old costume.

Captain Britain in Secret wars 0

So which panel is the flashback? I’m betting on Cap in his MI-13 costume as he has currently been appearing in Time Runs Out in his ” Davis” costume, but if that panel is a flashback how does it tie into Secret Wars, and will Ultimate Captain Britain show up and confuse the matter even more?

All I can say is Secret Wars issue 0 is out this Saturday as part of free comic book day so I’m going to get up early, pop into town and try to get hold of one to provide some answers.

Please feel free to ease my state of befuddlement by submitting any thoughts you have on Cap and Secret Wars in the comments section below.

Time Runs Out with a whimper for Captain Britain in Avengers 44

So just as Captain Britain came in like a lion when the Avengers crossover Time Runs Out began, now with the grand finale in Avengers 44 it seems he has gone out like the proverbial lamb.

Yes as Time Runs Out finishes it’s time to discuss how Captain Britain fares as the Marvel Universe changes in preparation for Secret Wars. So, following the cover below I will be giving my thoughts on this weeks Avengers 44, please do not read any further if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Avengers 44 with Captain Britain

So Time Runs Out crashes to its grand finale today, but sadly it seems Captain Britain is not required, not even in the talky scenes. I spoke in my last comments on Time Runs Out that I feared Cap had played his part and had been sidelined, and Avengers 44 confirms that as he appears in one panel.

Avengers 44 with Captain Britain and the last Avengers

Our shaggy Cap seems to be wondering if the price of appearing in Time Runs Out was worth it. I mean he lost his eye, gained a beard and saw the Captain Britain Corps perish powerless to save his colleagues. I wont repeat too many of my comments from my previous thoughts on Cap appearing in this event, except that I now believe his presence was only necessary to give weight to the death of the Captain Britain Corps; who themselves were to me a pointless editorial sacrifice to show us just how bad the bad guys were.

Yes this is comics and everything can change, and often does very quickly so let’s try to be positive. Captain Britain has been spotted in two Secret Wars comics, which I covered here and here, so future months won’t be Cap less, though we currently can’t speak for the quality of any of these appearances. All that seems to be confirmed is Cap will have a shave, put his helmet back on, still wield that mysterious sword of his and might just get his eye back. Yes hold your excitement in please.

But, check the title to the above panel,  it seems Captain Britain’s Avengers membership is confirmed again, but now as one of the last Avengers does this mean he might also appear in Avengers’ titles during Secret Wars? Let’s hope so as something good needs to come out of Time Runs Out for Captain Britain, and this might just be it.

Don’t take my thoughts the wrong way I enjoyed Time Runs Out and it leads nicely into Secret Wars which I am looking forward to, I’ve always enjoyed Hickman’s writing and he’s been joined in this event by some great artists. I’m always pleased that writers think to include Captain Britain in their stories and while I knew he was never going to be the hero of this event I would have liked to see him live up to the excitement of his arrival and use that big science brain of his to help the Illuminati. Still fingers crossed for Secret Wars.

Did you follow the ups and downs of Captain Britain during Time Runs Out? What do you think is next for him ? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Has Captain Britain been spotted inside Secret Wars 2?

Eagle eyed Captain Britain Blog follower Freemach might just have spotted Captain Britain in the interior pages of Secret Wars issue 2. Freemach provided a link to the Previewsworld site where interior art for Secret Wars 2 has been previewed. Have a look at what they found below.

Captain Britain in Secret Wars 2

Ok we know Cap is in the issue thanks to the cover below, but covers can be misleading and Cap is sadly well-known for being on them only to appear in a lesser role within. But could that be Cap in the first panel, and is he now armed with the soulsword or the original sword of might?

Captain britain Secret Wars variant

If this Captain Britain sighting is correct then it would hopefully suggest we can follow his escapades by reading the main Secret War title, and that he has a decent role to play in this event. Only yesterday i was worried about Cap ending his time in Time Runs Out with more of a whimper than a bang, maybe I’m going to be proven wrong about that, and for me that’s great news.

In Avengers 43 Time Runs Out for Captain Britain. But not in a way you might expect.

Avengers Time Runs Out finishes next month and it’s been a mixed ride for Captain Britain in the run up to Secret Wars, this weeks Avengers 43 seems to indicate his problems are over, but not in a way you might expect.

Following the cover below I will be giving my thoughts on this weeks Avengers 43, please do not read any further if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Avengers 43 with Captain Britain

So it all looks exciting as Cap and his fellow heroes burst into action on the cover, sadly none of this is replicated inside, but when recently have covers ever reflected a comic’s contents?

So just what does happen for Captain Britain? Well  it seems his time in Time Runs Out is about to do just that, and he may well survive into Secret Wars just by Hickman having nothing more he wants to do with the character. Let me explain.

Avengers 43 shows Cap standing around while the exposition flows around him looking grim, but contributing little else. This is because the action in Time Runs Out seems to be moving from the Illuminati to other players as the final issues draws near, because of this it seems a lot of background characters including Captain Britain seem to have finished their part in the event, and are now just window dressing. While this is typical of any big comic event for Cap fans it’s disappointing as there’s nothing worse than seeing your hero seemingly relegated to the subs bench as the match moves into the final minutes.

Captain Britain in New Avengers 43

Captain Britain does some fine listening

I can’t help but wonder is this it for Cap now he’s had everything he holds dear destroyed? Was he only present just because Hickman wanted to show the power of his baddies by using them to eliminate the Captain Britain Corps? What of his eye and beard as a variant Secret Wars cover shows Cap looking as he was prior to his Time Runs Out escapade. And just what is that sword?

Captain britain Secret Wars variant

I can’t help feeling Hickman has left us Cap fans with a lot of questions, and I worry we might never get any answers.Time Runs Out has two issues to go and I’m hoping for a major blow out and some serious fighting where Cap can prove his mettle, I don’t want him surviving by default I want him surviving by the skin of his teeth. Of course I could be wrong Hickman is a writer who delights in twists and surprises and there have been plenty of those so far, Cap might still finish the series as more than a bystander.

Are you surprised by how things might end for Captain Britain? What do you think could or should happen to wrap Time Runs Out in a way that shows Captain Britain in his true glory? Sound off in the comments below

Does Jim Cheung’s Captain Britain sketch show Cap’s future?

I spotted this New Avengers Captain Britain sketch by Jim Cheung on Instagram today. Notice anything interesting…

Jim Cheung captain Britain avengers

Now if this sketch posted a couple of weeks ago is from Time Runs Out did you spot two things, Captain Britain has it seems two eyes and definitely no beard !

Cheung hash tagged the picture….

#Beast #CaptainBritain #Avengers #NewAvengers#MarvelComics #Marvel #mcu #cover #pencils #Inks#process #WIP #JimCheung

So it seems it’s a cover; maybe an unannounced variant for Avengers Time Runs Out ?

The art got me thinking that Avengers Time Runs Out might end with Cap restored to his full binocular-visioned non-beardy glory. OK, I’ve been wrong before and since when has a recent comic book cover ever really represented the story inside, but I thought I’d share the art anyway.

In today’s New Avengers 30 Captain Britain questions are answered. UPDATED

UPDATED see end of article.

Ever since Captain Britain turned up in The Avengers Time Runs Out event his fans have been given very few answers about his disheveled, one-eyed, bearded appearance, the possible death of the Captain Britain Corps and how it all will lead into Secret Wars.

Now New Avengers 30 has been released today does it give Cap fans the answers they want as Tom Brevoort promised it would back in November last year; or have the mysteries people are dying to unravel become even more tangled?

Join us on the Captain Blog for a dissection of the issue, but please be aware this article includes spoilers for this week’s New Avengers 30, if you haven’t read the issue yet then do not carry on reading after the picture.

Captain Britain New Avengers 30

OK let start with the fact that despite the cover Captain Britain and the Corps have very little page time in New Avengers 30, but when they do appear Hickman gives us some answers which die-hard Cap fans might wish to remain ignorant about.

Plot wise the big bad behind Time Runs Out and the destruction of the Marvel Multiverse have been revealed as race of Beyonders also known as the Ivory Kings  who we are told can crunch universes with their power. They along with a race known as Mapmakers began to collapse the multiverse but why? Captain Britain found out the terrible answer.

Captain Britain New Avengers 30 2

Not looking good for the Corps is it, well sadly their luck doesn’t get any better.

Captain Britain New Avengers 30 3

So in four panels we have the loss of Cap’s eye in a fight with the Beyonder’s minions and the total destruction of the Captain Britain Corps along with Saturnyne, but hope isn’t lost as Cap escaped, and if I’m reading the panel correctly he has possibly left with the power to resurrect the Corps.

So where do we start, the Corps are gone but as death in comic books is about as permanent as a spray on tan I can’t really get that upset, Cap has come back from the dead a few times and Meggan his wife once so I’m sure the Corps will reappear after or during Secret Wars. Speaking of Meggan, where is she ? SHIELD don’t seem to have any record of her as I reported here and you’d think as Cap’s wife she might have been involved in his big scrap, but she is sadly absent and hopefully not another casualty.

Hickman is a master of the twisty-turny plot, springing surprises on his readers in whatever title of his you happen to read so I’m sure he still has lots of cards up his sleeve for Time Runs Out. Whether these surprises will reveal more about Cap I’m not sure as the book seems to be approaching end game territory when apart from the end of series explanations the title will probably focus more on fixing the multiverse rather than telling us more secrets. Speaking of secrets with Secret Wars imminent Cap might not be safe even after Time Runs Out finishes and the next big Marvel event starts, who knows?

What are your thoughts on New Avengers 30? Are you angry at the death of the Captain Britain Corps? Where do you think Meggan is? If you have any thoughts on these ideas or more please sound off in the comments below.

UPDATE – following a tip-off in the comments section from Braddock I checked out the epilogue to Spider-Verse in Amazing Spider-Man 15, and there is one survivor of the Captain Britain Corps, Spider-UK.

Spider Man Captain Britain Corps

So did Marvel just recreate the Captain Britain Corps but filled it full of Spider-Men instead?

In today’s New Avengers 29: Another clue as to the fate of Captain Britain and the Captain Britain Corps

As the Avengers event Time Runs Out becomes one comic closer to Secret Wars, you can read in New Avengers 29 today a clue as to what might have happened to Captain Britain and the Captain Britain Corps, and it’s an interesting one.

Please be aware this article includes spoilers for this week’s New Avengers 29, if you haven’t read the issue yet then do not carry on reading after the picture.

New Avengers 29 with Captain Britain

The plot has Mr Fantastic explaining how the Illuminati are trying to prevent the destruction of the Multiverse and how every attempt failed including ” A Multiversal one,” and in just one panel Hickman in New Avengers 29 lets out a clue as to just what fate befell Captain Britain and the Captain Britain Corps.

Captain Britain in New Avengers 29

So the possible destruction of the Captain Britain corps as shown on this future Time Runs Out cover below isn’t due to Captain Britain fighting them as I thought, but instead seems to have been a selfless sacrifice to save the Multiverse.

Captain Britain New Avengers 30

Now I’m not sure who the fight is against but the New Avengers panel is an interesting clue/pointer as to the fate of the Captain Britain Corps, and to me I’m glad if they have been destroyed that at least they went out fighting the good fight rather than just being dismissed with a stroke of a pen.

Of course Secret Wars is coming and nothing in the current Marvel Universe should be looked upon as being permanent; so the Corps could just as easily be written back into continuity as they were written out.

What do you think of the possible fate of the Captain Britain Corps? Can you shed any light on their foes? Let me know your theories in the comments below.

Captain Britain will be in Secret Wars

Marvel has recently released its interactive Battleworld map  highlighting the many worlds its major event Secret Wars will cover – curious then please click here.

Please note you might not be able to see the map if you are browsing on a phone.

The map reveals the involvement of Captain Britain or the Captain Britain Corps in the event, as if you click on the area named Higher Avalon Captain Britain appears.

Have a look below – click for a bigger picture.

Secret Wars Battlemap Captain Britain 2

Even more revealing is if you click to discover more Ultimate Captain Britain gets a mention, now Marvel have stated Secret Wars will merge the Marvel Universe with the Ultimate one, so will we see two Captain Britains? Two Caps could lead to some problems as the Ultimate Captain Britain is Brian Braddock’s brother Jamie who in the regular Marvel Universe is quite insane.

Also Marvel are using a picture of Cap which doesn’t match his current appearance in Avengers Time Runs Out.

So will Captain Britain get his eye back and have a shave for Secret Wars, who knows?

If more Captain Britain Secret Wars news breaks we will report it further. Captain Britain in Avengers 39. Let the ass kicking commence.

Our coverage of Captain Britain in Avengers Time Runs Out continues today with Cap popping up in Avengers issue 39. Things have been a bit quiet for Captain Britain in this Marvel event, but today he’s back with a bang.

Please be aware this article includes spoilers for this week’s Avengers 39, if you haven’t read the issue yet then do not carry on reading after the picture.

Avengers 39 Captain Britain

This whole issue is the fight followers of Time Runs Out have been waiting for as the Illuminati square up against SHIELD, and boy was it worth the wait.

Reed Richards lures SHIELD to a combat zone of the Illuminati’s choosing and allows his fellow members Captain Britain included to just kick ass, but what’s Cap armed with.

Avengers 39 Captain Britain and Excalibur

Is that Excalibur ? I think so but regardless Cap puts it too good use.

Avengers 39 Captain Britain and Excalibur 2

The narration is Reed Richard’s commentary as he sends the Illuminati into what basically ends up as SHIELD getting the crap beaten out of them, but back to Cap.

It’s hard to see in this issue but he still seems to me to have only one eye. though he has taken time to trim his beard. As for Excalibur we know Cap is a powerhouse so why he chooses to use the sword over his super powers isn’t made clear, unless it’s to prevent the loss of innocent life – SHIELD robots being the exception!

All this and a great cliffhanger ending add up to another great installment of Time Runs Out, with Captain Britain due to feature heavily in Avengers 30 – covered here – I’m loving the series and the Cap love.

Is that Excalibur Cap is armed with ? Are you enjoying Avengers Time Runs Out? let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
